1983 World Cup

In the format of Cricket World Cup 1983, India played two cricket matches in pool against three teams each. India was grouped with cricket team of Zimbabwe, the only World Cup minnows. However, with Australia s well as West Indies also, India was grouped and thereby formidable matchups were created for the team that was initially known for its lack of ability to play in World Cup Matches.

Against the tournament favourites, the campaign was opened up by India, that is, West Indies. The Cricket enthusiasts all over the world were in for a shock when India beat West Indies by a 34 runs margin because of a spectacular performance by Yashpal Sharma who scored 89 runs from 120 balls with 9 fours. In 60 overs, 262 runs were amassed by India and at 228 West Indies were sent back to the pavilion. Ravi Shastri took 3 wickets that was one of the high points of the match. Zimbabwe was later thrashed by India and the target of 156 runs was followed with 5 wickets and 23 overs to spare. Originally, when three wickets were bagged by Madan Lal, a foundation was laid. A half century or 50 runs were made by Sandeep Patil through 54 balls, 1 six and 7 fours. Two days later India got a severe beating from Australia and the morale and confidence of Indian Team came crashing down. While chasing a mammoth score created by Australian team at 320, India winded up at a score of 158 runs.

The group stage’s second half was opened by India and lost against West Indies by sixty six runs. A heroic display was put up by Vivian Richards where at 146 balls, he scored 119 runs and created a score of 282 runs for his team that was difficult to chase by the country. Though, Mohinder Amarnath created a score of 80 runs from 139 balls, the score created by West Indies was difficult to chase. The next match played by India again created history when they played against Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe’s bowling line up was emerging when India was at one stage five-seventeen. Defeat was round the corner and its making for the semifinal qualifications was looking difficult but at the same time, a famous inning was played by Kapil Dev when he scored 175 runs at 138 balls interspersed with six sixes and 16 fours. India came back to the game with a bang and in a partnership with coming 9th in line up, Syed Kirmani, a score of 266 runs was created. Zimbabwe team started well but later Madan Lal and Kapil Dev shattered their innings bringing Zimbabwe on a back foot. India won the match by 31 runs. The match with Australia was a must win and India did the unthinkable by winning the match by 118 runs. This happened when Roger Binny and Madan Lal took 4 wickets.

India continued its victory spree with winning a semi final match against England by six wickets. Sandeep Patil, Mohinedr Amarnath and Yaspal Sharma were pioneer in bringing this victory closer to home. Kapil Dev further simplified the task by picking up 3-35 and took India to Finals. Besides India, another team that reached finals was West Indies and the competition was tight. Most of the cricket enthusiasts expected West Indies to win even when in preliminary rounds, West Indies was beaten by India. At 183, India was bowled out by West Indies when Srikkant scored 38 runs from 57 balls with 1 six and 7 fours. West Indies was all set to win the match with Vivian Richards at helm of the affairs but soon the team collapsed when Indian bowlers brought the West Indies team on its knees. At 140, West Indies team took a bow and India won the match by 43 runs. The day is still etched in the memory of scores of Indians.
